About the Playwright

Born in Toronto, Ellen McGinn spent her childhood at various Air Force bases across Canada. After acting at Pier One Theatre in Halifax, she returned to Toronto in 1975 to work as part of a feminist theatre collective called Stargates Theatre, where she co-wrote, co-produced and performed in The Great Round and Preparation, both plays performed at the Bathurst Street Theatre. After moving west, she studied corporeal mime, then attended UBC and graduated in 1999 with an MFA in Creative Writing.

In 2002 her book of poetry, From Dark Horse Road, was published by Blue Lake Books. Her plays Comfort Me With Apples and Love Letters For Georgia have been produced in the Vancouver and Victoria Fringe Festivals. She has contributed an essay in the anthology Love Me True, edited by Jane Silcott and Fiona Lam, published by Caitlin Press. In 2022 her essay Tabernacle was published in The Fiddlehead.

According to Wikipedia, “Readers Theatre is a style of theatre in which the actors present dramatic readings of narrative material without costumes, props, scenery, or special lighting. Actors use only scripts and vocal expression to help the audience understand the story.”

Langham Court’s Readers’ Theatre presents plays in non-staged and semi-staged versions.  Usually the actors are seated, facing the audience, with scripts in hand or scripts on stands placed in front.

We provide theatre-lovers of all experience levels opportunities to try something new — a new role, or a new acting, directing, or play-writing opportunity. We welcome plays of all types, but generally recommend plays of one hour in length or less.

If you have a play idea you would like to see produced by Langham’s Readers’ Theatre, or if you’d simply like to be involved in some way, please contact us at gm@langhamtheatre.ca
