June Higgins
June Higgins (1955-2023) was a student at VISA from 2005-2017, however she started taking art courses in 1984 at the Victoria College of Art.
She studied art on a part-time basis while working full-time for the Government of British Columbia. June completed a Diploma of Fine Arts at VISA in 2017 (while still working full-time at her government job). After completing her Diploma, she made the decision to retire and commit to her art practice on a full-time basis.
She began this journey by moving to the UK for a year and completing her BFA at the University of Gloucestershire, in Cheltenham, UK. When she returned to Canada, she obtained a studio space and devoted her days to her artwork and participated in several exhibitions. The last exhibition of her work was at the Gage Gallery in September 2022.
June’s artwork is based on her love of architectural ornament and nature and she never tired of using these as source materials for her intricate and highly decorative abstract paintings.
June passed away in 2024 and her family has donated her beautiful artwork to raise funds for the Vancouver Island School of Art (VISA).

The Vancouver Island School of Art (VISA)
The Vancouver Island School of Art (VISA) is downtown Victoria’s only post-secondary institution devoted to the visual arts. The school was founded in 2004 by artist and instructor, Wendy Welch. To-date more than 5,000 individuals have taken courses and workshops at the school. VISA offers a one-year Certificate of Visual Arts program that is transferable to Emily Carr University and Vancouver Island University. Students be part of a program or take individual offerings. VISA is truly a school for all with a community of students that range from 17 to 90 years. The school is excited to announce its 20th anniversary this year and looks forward to a strong future, however the tuition only covers 80% of the costs of running and school so VISA relies on fundraising initiatives and donations from art supporters in the community.
