Target & Langham Fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Target Theatre and Langham Court Theatre will be staging a fundraiser in support of the Alzheimer Society of B.C on June 17.

The Victoria Target Theatre Society is a company of senior actors that performs plays for other seniors, using material that entertains, informs, resonates and empathizes with seniors.  Specific topics include elder abuse, stereotyping of seniors, Alzheimer disease, intimacy and sexuality, coming to terms with death and dying, hearing loss and, in the case of Stayin Alive – The Target Radio Hour, the medium is the message as these active and engaged seniors embrace life with passion and open-hearted joy.

I’m Still Here

This play is a research-based drama on living with dementia. Written by Vrenia Ivonoffski with Gail Mitchell, Christine Jonas-Simpson, and Renate Krakauer, I’m Still Here is based on research by Dr. Christine Jonas-Simpson, Nursing Research Unit, Toronto Sunnybrook & Women’s Hospital, and Dr. Gail Mitchell, York University.

This play follows the lives of four people touched by Alzheimer disease. The story brings out the profound effects of the disease not only on the sufferers, but also their friends and families. While I’m Still Here is moving and painful at times, it also offers hope for those dealing with the clients, friends, or loved ones who are suffering from this debilitating and misunderstood disease.

This play has been informed by research conducted with persons living with dementia during the early and later parts of their journey and with daughters whose mothers were diagnosed with Alzheimer disease. The creation of I’m Still Here was generously supported by the Collaborative Research Program: Rehabilitation and Long Term Care, Mr. Kenneth G. Murray and the Murray Alzheimers Research and Education program in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo; the Sunnybrook and Women’s Research Institute; and the Canadian Nurses Foundation.

Stayin’ Alive

Target Theatre is thrilled to welcome you to this special event – an on-air radio show broadcast world-wide before a live studio audience! Co-authored by Susan Wilkey (Musical Director) and Judith McDowell (former Artistic Director) Stayin’ Alive was brought to life under the guidance of present Artistic Director, James Forsythe. You are invited to sit back and enjoy the comedy of Doc & Dotty, the drama of The Young, The Old, and The Breathless, and the melodies of The Target Singers who continue to wow audiences from coast to coast.  Feel free to sing, clap, or hum along.

Age Recommendations: You don’t have to be middle-aged or senior to enjoy these shows, but it helps! Seriously good for anyone who knows a grandparent (or is one).

Running Time: 80 minutes with a 20-minute intermission.

Audience Advisory: This production uses humour to deal with serious and not-so-serious topics.
